Meet Joe Girard

As a child, Joe was physically and emotionally abused by his Sicilian father Joe Girard Shoe Shinewho regularly beat him and threw him out of the house. To earn money for food and shelter, Joe shined shoes in the dingy bars and seedy lounges of Detroit’s toughest neighborhoods. He regularly slept in boxcars and skid row flophouses costing 25 cents per night.

As a young adult, Joe failed at everything he tried. He went bankrupt in construction, lost job after job and was discharged from the army after only a few months with a painful back injury.
